The church of St. George or “Sveti Georgi” was built by the Romans in the 4th century, in the ancient city of Serdica and erected on the site of a former pagan temple.
Today it is not only the oldest church in the capital, but also the oldest building in Sofia.
After being converted into a mosque during the Ottoman invasion in the 16th century, the church was reconditioned as an Orthodox church after the expulsion of the Orthodox from Bulgaria at the end of the 19th century.
The interior of the building still preserves the 10th-century frescoes that decorate the walls and the dome, depicting the figures of various prophets. The church is located in the courtyard of a government administrative building in the center of the city, very close to the remains of the ancient settlement of Serdica. The church is open to visitors every day from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, except during times of worship.
